What an amplifier actually does

How much should you spend?

Connect the left and right speakers with correct polarity, keep the amplifier ventilated, and start with the volume low. Use familiar recordings with different demands: a sparse vocal track for midrange balance, a dense rock mix for congestion, acoustic bass for low-frequency control, and a quiet passage for hiss. Listen at matched volume when comparing components. The louder option will almost always seem more impressive for the first minute.

I also recommend a short measurement check where possible. A phone app can reveal gross level differences, while manufacturer data can show frequency response, noise, and distortion. Measurements will not tell you whether a walnut cabinet fits your room, but they can expose exaggerated claims. Trust your ears. But measure first.
