Streaming Services Sound Test: Spotify vs Apple Music vs Tidal
Do Spotify, Apple Music, and Tidal actually sound different? A mix engineer runs level-matched comparisons and explains what the formats and real-world listening reveal.

The Streaming Sound Quality Argument That Never Ends

I’ve lost track of how many times someone has told me that Tidal’s HiFi tier “blows Spotify away” or that Apple Music’s AAC encoding somehow preserves more emotion than the competition. The claims are passionate. The controlled evidence is usually missing.

So I did what I used to do in the studio when two converters or two monitoring chains needed settling: level-match them, switch between them, and listen longer than the hype lasts.

This is not a lab paper. It is a practical comparison from someone who has spent years making records and then listening to those same records through the same services the rest of us use.

What the Services Actually Deliver

A quick reality check on the main tiers most people actually pay for:

  • Spotify Premium: Ogg Vorbis up to 320 kbps (or AAC on some platforms). Lossy.

  • Apple Music: AAC at 256 kbps. Lossy, but generally well-regarded implementation.

  • Tidal HiFi / HiFi Plus: FLAC lossless (CD quality) and, on the higher tier, higher-resolution options and proprietary or partner high-res paths. Also offers a lower “High” tier that is lossy.

There are other services, but these three cover the bulk of the “does it sound different?” conversation.

Lossless is not automatically better in every situation. The original recording, the mastering, your DAC, your headphones or speakers, and the volume matching all matter more than the presence or absence of compression artifacts once the bitrate is reasonably high.

How I Compared Them

I used the same tracks across services whenever possible (same master, same album version). Playback went through the same clean digital path into the same monitoring chain. Levels were matched using test tones and by ear on steady-state material. I listened both sighted and with the interface hidden from easy view.

Material included:

  • Well-recorded acoustic and jazz

  • Dense modern pop and hip-hop

  • Rock with cymbals and distorted guitars

  • A few older recordings that already have limited high-frequency content

I also checked the same tracks at different volume levels and on both revealing headphones and more forgiving everyday earbuds.

What I Actually Heard

On good recordings through a transparent chain, the differences between Spotify’s 320 kbps, Apple Music’s 256 kbps AAC, and Tidal’s lossless were small. In many cases they were smaller than the difference between two different masterings of the same album.

When differences appeared, they were usually in this order of noticeability:

  1. Mastering differences. Services sometimes carry different masters or different loudness-normalized versions. This is a bigger variable than the codec.

  2. High-frequency air and cymbal texture. On very clean, bright recordings, lossless could sound slightly more open or less “soft” on the top end compared with the lossy versions. The gap was modest.

  3. Low-level detail and reverb tails. Lossless occasionally preserved a bit more sense of space on sparse material. Again, not dramatic.

  4. Dense, heavily compressed modern tracks. Differences largely disappeared. There isn’t much left to preserve once the mastering has already hammered the dynamics.

Apple Music’s AAC implementation held up extremely well. In several cases I preferred its tonal balance to Spotify’s, independent of the lossless question. Spotify was perfectly listenable and never fell apart; it just occasionally sounded a little more closed-in on the most revealing material.

Tidal’s lossless was the most consistent “nothing is missing” presentation, but the improvement over the best lossy options was incremental, not transformative.

The Volume and Loudness Trap

Loudness normalization is a bigger real-world factor than most people admit. If one service plays a track 1–2 dB louder, it will often be preferred in a casual comparison. Any serious test has to defeat that.

Once levels are matched, a lot of the “night and day” claims shrink to “I think I hear a little more air on the ride cymbal.”

When the Differences Matter More

You are more likely to notice format and codec differences if:

  • You listen on a revealing system (good headphones or speakers, clean chain)

  • You play dynamic, well-recorded material at moderate to loud volumes

  • You are specifically listening for high-frequency decay and low-level detail

  • You switch rapidly between services on the same track

You are less likely to notice (or care) if:

  • You mostly listen on earbuds while commuting

  • Your library is dominated by modern loudness-war masters

  • You listen at lower volumes

  • You are focused on the song rather than the reproduction

Both groups of listeners are valid. Only one of them needs to obsess over lossless tiers.

Practical Recommendations

  • If you already pay for Apple Music or Spotify and enjoy the catalog and interface, the sound quality is not a compelling reason to switch for most people.

  • If you want the technical reassurance of lossless and higher-resolution options, and the catalog works for you, Tidal (or equivalents like Qobuz) is a rational choice.

  • Catalog, playlist quality, offline behavior, and ecosystem integration will affect your daily satisfaction more than the last 5 % of codec performance.

  • Whatever you choose, turn off any extra “sound enhancement” or EQ the app applies by default if you want to hear what the service is actually delivering.

The Bottom Line

The gap between a well-implemented 256–320 kbps lossy stream and true lossless is real but modest on a revealing system and often negligible on everyday ones. Mastering differences and loudness normalization frequently outweigh the codec.

Spend your energy on better speakers, better headphones, better placement, and better recordings. The streaming service is rarely the weakest link once you are past the free tiers.

Trust your ears. But measure first.

And the next time someone tells you their service “destroys” the others, ask whether they matched volume and whether they were listening to the same master.
